The US Department of Housing and Urban Development conducts an annual count of homeless people in the US, and found an average of 564,708 people living on the streets per night in January 2015. Today a few thoughts on homelessness, its health consequences, and its causes. We hosted a Dean’s Seminar on the topic in September featuring Jim O’Connell, who has spent a lifetime delivering health to the homeless in Boston. Various services across the city have stepped up to take care of this population, including new shelters and the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. Homelessness has been quite visible in our community over the past year, particularly after the Long Island Bridge closing, which left more than 400 people overnight without a place to live.
